Taranaki

Taranaki is a region in the west of New Zealand’s North Island. It is named after its famous Mount Taranaki. The main centre of the Taranaki region is the city of New Plymouth, New Plymouth is located in North Taranaki along with Inglewood and Waitara. South Taranaki towns include Hawera, Stratford and Eltham. Other centres include Waitara, Inglewood, Stratford, Opunake,Okato, Kaponga, Eltham, Hawera, Patea and Waverley. Mount Taranaki or Mount Egmont is an active volcano present. It is centred on the Taranaki Peninsula and extends north to the Mokau River and south and east to include the Waitotara River. Its topography is marked by numerous stream valleys, including those of the Patea and Waitara rivers. Dam dropping, sea fishing, fly fishing, kayak fishing, white water adventures, caving, rockclimbing, tramping, and abseiling are some of the activities that will keep you busy.
Some of the cities in Taranaki are Egmont Village, Eltham, Mount Egmont, Oakura, Opunake, Piopio, Stratford, Waitara. The area around the sunny city of New Plymouth is well-known for its black sand surfing beaches and glorious parks and gardens.

The Egmont National Park encompasses the mountain and the land around it. Lush rainforest covers the foothills of the mountain, but the landscape changes the higher you go. Mount Taranaki becomes a place to ski.
